Authorities in Northern Virginia are investigating a shooting that left the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy hospitalized with serious injuries, allegedly at the hands of their son.
Over the weekend, Loudoun deputies responded to the family residence in Ashburn, Virginia, at approximately 7:32 p.m., after receiving reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, first responders located a woman, later identified as Mia Bieniemy, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and remains in stable condition.
An investigation into the matter remains ongoing. Elijah Bieniemy is currently being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center without bond, pending further court proceedings.
At the time of the incident, Eric Bieniemy was with the Chiefs during the team’s pre-season training camp in Missouri. He has since left camp to be with his wife, and assistant coaches will temporarily assume his responsibilities while he remains away.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid gave an update on the situation, before expressing that the organization’s “thoughts and prayers” are with Eric Bieniemy and his family.
“I can’t get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it,” he said during a press conference. “He has a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and we’ll just let time take care of it from there. But Mia is stable, which is a plus and so is Eric Jr. That’s all important.”
“[Mia Bieniemy is] a saint, we all know that, those of you that know her. One of God’s great blessings,” he added. “But things happen. And you have to work through it. That’s where we’re at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal.
“On these things, real life. So you take care of that,” Reid concluded. “We’ll be able to keep it moving here, but the most important thing is EB has an opportunity to spend some time there [and] take care of that business.”
Eric Bieniemy returned to Kansas City as offensive coordinator earlier this year, after coaching stops with the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears. He previously spent several seasons with the Chiefs, helping guide the team to three Super Bowl championship wins.
