A University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football player has been charged with attempted murder and assault after authorities alleged he stabbed two teammates inside a campus athletic facility hours before the team’s final home game of the season.
According to charging documents filed in Jefferson County, 20-year-old offensive lineman Daniel Mincey is accused of attacking the players with a knife on Saturday morning at UAB’s Football Operations Building. The court filings did not detail what precipitated the violence, and the university has not released additional information, citing the ongoing investigation.
Mincey, a redshirt freshman, playing his first year of sports eligibility as a college sophomore, is listed at 6-foot-4 and from Pompano Beach, Florida. He transferred to UAB from the University of Kentucky. Court records did not indicate whether he has obtained legal representation.
During a press briefing on Monday, athletic director Mark Ingram called the incident “a very sad day for UAB football and for UAB athletics.”
The two injured players, identified in court documents as Joshua Underwood, a freshman defensive lineman from Fultondale, Alabama, and JaSire Peterson, a redshirt sophomore from Union City, New Jersey, were transported to UAB Hospital for treatment shortly after the stabbing. Interim head coach Alex Mortensen confirmed both have since been released and are recovering.
“They appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” Mortensen said. He declined to discuss the circumstances of the incident, emphasizing that the university’s priority is the health and well-being of its athletes. Counseling services have been made available to players, and Mortensen said anyone needing time away from practice will be accommodated.
Despite the turmoil, the team proceeded with its Senior Day game against the University of South Florida on Saturday afternoon. Several players chose not to participate. UAB fell 48–18, dropping the Blazers to 3–8 overall and 1–6 in the American Athletic Conference. Their final game of the season is scheduled for Nov. 29 at Tulsa, Oklahoma.
University officials have not released additional details regarding the investigation, and no motive has been publicly identified. Police have not announced further arrests or suspects in the case.
UAB reiterated in a statement that its “top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students.”
We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition. Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect—another player—remains in custody, and an investigation is taking place,” an initial statement from the university reads.
