England defender Jarell Quansah must miss not only England’s upcoming match against Norway, but the subsequent game if England advances in the World Cup, FIFA said on July 9.
FIFA rules state that a red card results in an ejection and an automatic ban.
FIFA said that Quansah’s ban will last two games because his actions constituted serious foul play.
Quansah’s cleats struck the upper shin of a Mexican player without first touching the ball.
England coach Thomas Tuchel told reporters after the game that what transpired, in his view, should not have resulted in a red card. He noted that initially no card was issued, but the referee and video review team reviewed the play and decided the red card was warranted.
“Jarell is very upset, of course,” Tuchel said.
He also joked that the England captain could contact U.S. President Donald Trump, who had already contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino after Folarin Balogun, an American player, received a red card.
FIFA ultimately suspended Balogun’s ban, allowing him to play against Belgium, but the United States still lost.
FIFA has said that its disciplinary committee independently made its decision regarding Balogun and that he was not involved.
Quansah was with the team practicing on Thursday ahead of England’s quarterfinal game against Norway. The game is scheduled for July 11.
The quarterfinals were starting on Thursday with France playing Morocco.
