A 7-year-old girl near Bela-Bela, South Africa, shot and killed her 6-year-old playmate, police told AFP Monday. Police have opened a murder case, but are awaiting instructions from the national authorities since the case involves a minor.

The deceased girl was the daughter of a farm worker. The girl who shot her was the granddaughter of the farm owner, and she was at the farm for a visit. The two girls had been friends for a while, reports AFP. The girl died on scene Saturday, and the girl who shot her is back with her parents.

The gun belonged to the 7-year-old’s grandfather, who is due in court Monday for negligent handling of a firearm.
