Somali pirates released Said Mohamed Rageh, the ports minister of Puntland, a semi-autonomous region of Somalia, on Wednesday.

Rageh had been kidnapped on Friday after an ambush, and was held in a pirate stronghold in Jariban, a town outside of Puntland, reported the BBC.

The minister was released without ransom, according to Somali officials.

Puntland declared its autonomy in 1998, and has less violence than other regions in Somalia. However, it has become a stronghold for pirates, who make up about half of the region’s prison population, according to the BBC.

The region has taken a hard stance against pirates. Puntland’s interior ministry announced on Tuesday that it would begin a campaign to attack potential pirate strongholds, reported AHN News.
