Four troops died in one improvised bomb attack and a service member was killed in a separate blast in the south of Afghanistan on Wednesday, while a sixth died in an insurgent attack in the east, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said, according to Reuters.

According to NATO, this year has been the most deadly of the past nine. At least 34 other NATO troops have been killed this month alone. The death toll has totaled more than 2,000 since 2001.

NATO didn’t release any specific details in regards to the location of the attacks or the nationalities of the troops.

In their efforts to turn the tide, NATO and Afghan forces are increasingly targeting insurgent leaders.

On Monday, a coalition airstrike killed Taliban commander Shirin Agha and another militant in northern Kunduz Province, NATO said, the Associated Press reported.

According to the alliance, Afghan and coalition forces have killed or captured 18 Taliban commanders this past month. It was however not possible to verify independently their identities.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi has accused NATO of a propaganda campaign to demoralize the insurgents by inventing Taliban leaders and alleging they were killed or captured, AP reported.
