Should I or Shouldn’t I?

Dear Kathy,

My two older brothers both graduated from 4 year colleges. My parents expect me to follow along the same path. I’m worried about taking on all those college loans and not being able to get a high enough paying job to pay off the debt and still be able to live on my own.

I’ve been seriously thinking about joining the military after I graduate high school and getting job-related training for free. My parents and brothers are very against the idea and I’m not sure what to do. What do you think?

Brent

P.S. Both of my brothers are successful. I don’t want to be the family failure.

Dear Brent,

Henry Ford said, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” Don’t let fear inform your decision.

I suggest that you do your research into all four branches of the service (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines) as well as the Reserves and National Guard. See what they have to offer you. Talk to anyone you know in the service, or formerly in the service, in order to double check the information from independent sources.

Speak to your school’s college advisor as well as the financial aid representatives at colleges you may be interested in. Get facts and figures. Then, sit down with your parents, brothers, and others whom you trust and respect and ask for their feedback.

I encourage you to do your homework and trust your gut. Please let me know how things work out!

All the best,

Kathy
