After songwriter and record producer Blanco Brown’s infectious “Git Up” hit number one on Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, police departments across the country got into challenging their brothers and sisters in blue to show their stuff with a viral dance music video.

When the “Git Up” challenge hit San Antonio, Texas, Deputy John Estrada, who had been on the force for five years, stepped up to take on the dance and provide some motivation for new recruits to sign up. “Calling on all prospects to ‘Git Up’ and apply,” the Bexar County Sheriff captioned in a Facebook post.

The deputy danced his heart out to represent the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department, and his smooth moves attracted hundreds of thousands of views.

The genius of the “Git Up” challenge is that artist Blanco Brown tells fans exactly how to do the dance as the song goes along. Estrada however, didn’t seem to need too much prodding. Filming with his Sheriff’s Department pickup truck in the background, Estrada sported his badge and uniform, a crisp cowboy hat, and some shades as he cut loose with the San Antonio skyline as his backdrop.

Then Estrada launches into an expert rendition of the dance, complete with its two-step, cowboy, slip and slide, shoulder rolls, and dips.

While Estrada was hoping to help out the recruitment campaign for his department, the enthusiastic response was amazing. Many of the most positive comments came from women who joked about falling foul of the law in San Antonio to send the young officer their way on a call.

Estrada responded in kind, “Thank you everybody for the amazing feedback! I am very grateful to have the opportunity to put smiles in my community and any other community who viewed this video!”

Even more touching was a tribute video that someone sent Estrada online, featuring a young boy in a cowboy hat watching the deputy’s version of the “Git Up” on TV and dancing along. On his Facebook, Estrada noted, “I have stated before that even If I motivate, inspire, move or make one person’s day is enough and I know I did something right!”

It turns out that the “Dancing Deputy” isn’t the only secret weapon in the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department’s recruitment arsenal. Deputy Alexander Mena rose to viral fame in 2018 for his incredible lip-sync videos. Mena started recording lip-sync videos of classic songs in Spanish and English and posting them on Snapchat for the amusement of friends and family.

What started out as a way to entertain loved ones turned into a viral sensation that brought great press for his department. Mena’s specialty is “Fuiste Mala” by the Tex-Mex group the Kumbia Kings. Mena said to KENS, “At the end of the day, you still need to have a good vibe and maintain a positive attitude in this career.”
