KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—Dr. Qingyuan Wu, who has lived in the United States for over 30 years, has admired the reputation of Shen Yun Performing Arts for a long time, but hadn’t had the opportunity to see a performance in the United States. Recently he returned to Taipei for academic reasons when he learned that Shen Yun was touring in Taiwan and performing in Kaohsiung where he saw the performance on March 14, with his wife. At intermission, his joy and excitement about seeing the show was evident. “Shen Yun’s magnificence is far beyond my imagination,” he said.
Dr. Wu said that Shen Yun deserved its reputation and that the performance was spectacular. “I was deeply moved. In every program, the scenes on the dynamic backdrops and colorful costumes are on a world class level. And it was not only the performance, but it also had profound meaning,” he said.
He also spoke highly of Shen Yun’s solo vocalists and, in particular, the tenor, saying, “As soon as he started to sing, the audience seemed to be overwhelmed, and the lyrics made one think deeply.”
Dr. Wu appreciated the performance and said he felt a deep sense of pride in such an outstanding performing arts company that showcased China’s authentic, traditional culture. “Upon hearing of Shen Yun, I deemed it a high-class performance, but after seeing it today, it turned out to be even better than I had expected.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts was established in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.
“After more than 60 years of Communist rule in China, and especially after the Cultural Revolution, Chinese traditional culture has been all but completely demolished. However, the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity, as well as a reverence for the gods and the heavens, cannot be destroyed,” says Shen Yun’s website.
By 2009, Shen Yun had already grown to three performance companies and orchestras of comparable size. Today, Shen Yun counts many winners of international dance and vocal competitions among its artists, and the orchestras include many musicians from world-renowned symphonies and conservatories.
