Apple looks set to launch at least one Retina iMac with a 5K display.

9to5Mac and Apple product leaker Jack March were privy to information concerning a new line of ultra high-resolution Retina 5K display iMacs.

The possibility of higher-resolution iMac displays was first mooted when it was discovered that the OS X Yosemite betas made reference to 6400 x 3600, 5760×3240, and 4096×2304 resolution screens.

Citing a source “familiar with Apple’s plans,” March claims that only the new 27-inch iMac will be getting a 5K (5120 x 2880) resolution display. In comparison, the current 27-inch iMac only has a 2560 x 1440 resolution display.

The 21.5-inch iMac could get a Retina display “when powerful Broadwell processors start shipping,” but will retain the 1920 x 1080 resolution screen in iMac line refresh.

Both new iMacs have the same ultra slim design as the current iMac line, and should boast some updated hardware such as faster processors and better Wi-Fi antennas.

The 27-inch iMac should pack an Intel i7 4790K processor that has a base clock speed of 4.0GHz, and will feature AMD graphic cards. The currently iMac line uses NVIDIA cards.

The iMacs won’t feature the new USB Type-C port that will be found in the upcoming 12-inch MacBook Air, however.

Apple is expected to announce the new iMacs alongside the second generation iPad Air at their yet to be announced press event in October.
