NEW YORK—The Department of Education (DOE) released the fourth annual Progress Report on the city’s 1,140 K–8 schools on Monday.

The Report takes into account test scores; attendance; progress of special needs students and English Language Learners; and surveys of students, teachers, and parents.

Many schools saw a drop in the letter grade awarded to them by the DOE due to a change in standards in this year’s report. A cap was put on the number of schools that could be awarded A and B letter grades to try to rectify the claims of inaccuracy in last year’s report (84 percent received As and 13 percent received Bs in 2009).

Queens was the highest-scoring borough and District 26 was the highest-scoring district.
This year’s results:
25 percent received As
35 percent received Bs
35 percent received Cs
4 percent received Ds
1 percent received Fs

2010 compared to 2009:
296 schools received the same grade this year as last year
22 schools improved
398 schools declined
