Dear Kathy,

I lost my job 2 years ago and I still haven’t found another full-time position. The economy is lousy and the recession doesn’t look like it’s getting better anytime soon. I used to be an optimist, but at this point I am definitely in a depression. I can’t support my family and I feel like a failure.

Sincerely,

           “Bob”

Dear Bob,

Many people feel the way you do these days, Bob. It sounds like you’re experiencing recession depression. Expand your definition of “success” to include more than supporting your family financially. Think of the many other areas of your life in which you are successful and make a positive impact on those around you.

The better job will eventually come. In the meantime, reach out to positive people in your life who care about you and consider doing some volunteer work in your free time. Helping those less fortunate may help you keep your own situation in perspective. Please keep me updated regarding your situation.

All my best,

Kathy
