A race car killed two at the Marysville Raceway Park north of Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday evening. The names of the victims, aged 14 and 68, have not been released.

A race car experienced apparent mechanical failures and failed to make a turn in a Sprint Car race at the Marysville Raceway Park on Saturday night, crashing into the pit row where two people were hit and died.

One died on the scene, the other later on, according to a tweet by the raceway’s announcer Steven Blakesley.

The 17-year-old driver, Chase Johnson, was uninjured. ABC News reported that the 14-year-old was Johnson’s cousin, and the 68-year-old was the owner of some cars in the race.

Yuba County Sheriff’s Capt. Ron Johnson told the Associated Press (AP) that no one else was injured in the accident. Blakesley told AP that the car was going about 90 mph.

It was the opening day of the California Sprint Car Civil War Series. Blakesley tweeted that money from the race would be donated to the families of the deceased.

He wrote: “I want to send thoughts and prayers to everyone involved in tonight’s tragedy at Marysville Raceway Park.”
