A sting by an Indian TV channel showed that some remand prisoners have accessed social networking sites via smart phones, updating their Facebook accounts, and uploading their recent photos clicked in the jail premises.

The accused are imprisoned in connection with the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T. P. Chandrasekharan. A Malayalam TV channel’s sting operation exposed this severe violation of prison rules and regulation, putting a question mark on the monitoring ways of the concerned officials.

“This is a serious lapse. This warrants stern action. It also showed that the CPM has formed its fraction even within prisons,” Ramesh Chennithala, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, told the reporters according to the Press Trust of India.

According to media reports, Home Minister Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan admitted that the incident was grave and showed breach of prison rules; he said that the home minister and DGP (prison) will be looking into the matter and those found guilty will be punished severely.

Chandrasekaran, who had walked out of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and formed RMP,
was murdered on May 4, 2012, near his native village Onchiyam, supposedly by group of people believed to be the supporters of CPI(M).
