Prince William and Kate Middleton could soon be announcing their engagement, following news of a commemorative coin in production, UK tabloid the Daily Mail reported.

The couple has been together for nine years and Prince William is second in line to the British throne.

Wedding nuptials between the Prince and Ms Middleton have long been a hot topic amongst the UK press with the big question being not so much whether they will marry, but when.

Now, British tabloids have discovered that the Royal Mint has plans to produce a commemorative coin, celebrating the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, according to the Daily Mail. This has ignited speculation that an engagement announcement will soon be made.

The Royal Mint staff appear to have had strict instructions not to discuss the matter, but the Mail on Sunday said it had received inside information that a plaster mould, the first step in coin production, had been made.

Press officers at Clarence House, Prince William’s official residence, have been very tight-lipped over the wedding date, but a senior aide was somewhat more forthcoming, the Daily Mail reported.

“We don’t know the date, only William and Kate know,” the senior aide told the Mail. “I don’t expect we’ll be told until the last minute. William plays his cards very close to his chest, that’s his nature.”
