Mexican prosecutor Francisco Alor Quesada told local media that unidentified assailants set the bar on fire early on Tuesday.

Among the dead were several women working in the bar and two customers, the Diario de Yucatan newspaper reported.

Six were said to have died at the scene, while the remaining two died from their injuries after being taken to hospital.

The suspects were reported to have arrived at the bar in a black car and a truck.

Cancun has become known as the “Mexican Caribbean” and is immensely popular with tourists from the U.S.

Until now, it has remained largely insulated from the drug-related violence which has engulfed Mexico.
