Netizens are blasting the owners of a Chinese zoo after photos surfaced of an emaciated brown bear in its refuge.

The bear was photographed at the Xinxiang People’s Park in the Henan province of Central China.

Officials responded to the barage with criticism saying that the bear is in good condition despite appearances. They say the one-year-old bear is still young and appears thinner because it is currently shedding fur.

“It’s skin and bones, looks so pitiful, don’t know if it was abused. Or hungry?” one online user said on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo, according to New York Post.

“Shouldn’t it eat more if it’s in its growth period? It’s already too skinny!” another said.

“It doesn’t look like a bear to me, it looks more like a dog. something is really wrong! Hope authorities will do something to save this poor bear before its too late,” said Maria Katherine Mayagma  on Facebook.
