A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Panzhihua, an industrial city with population of over one million in Sichuan Province in southwest China, on Saturday August 30.

According to the Sichuan Seismic Network, approximately 400 aftershocks have occurred in the quake area, one of them of 5.6 magnitude. The massive Sichuan earthquake of May 2008 was of 8.0 magnitude.

As the number of casualties from Saturday’s earthquake increased, people in Panzhihua were still in urgent need of supplies such as tents and blankets. The city is in need of coordinated support for 90,000 square meters of board houses, 15,000 tents, and 60,000 sets of blankets.

The supply of coal and electricity is also low.

According to the BBC News, because an output circuit from the Ertan Hydropower Station to Panzhihua was broken, the power capacity has been reduced by more than 300,000 kilowatts.

As of Sunday afternoon, it was reported that there were only 220,000 tons of coal in reserve, enough to last only 2-3 days in normal operation.

It is estimated that the earthquake has caused Panzhihua a direct economic loss of about 1.7 billion yuan (approximately US$250 million).

According to the Panzhihua Earthquake Mitigation Center, there were approximately 1500 damaged houses, 200 collapsed houses, nine damaged reservoirs, and 13 damaged ponds.

Due to the Panzhihua earthquake, some of the Kunming Railway Station Lines are temporarily changing routes or are out of service.
