LONDON—A megaphone, a street corner, and civic spirit came together in Camden Town, London one Olympic evening. Danny Shine raised his voice, taking a spirited and light-hearted swipe at the merits touted by Olympic supporters.
Thirty or so Londoners stopped in their tracks—on the way home from work, the market, or wherever the day had brought them—to listen, contemplate, and engage in a congenial debate.
Emotions of outrage, enthusiasm, laughter, and approval rippled through the Wednesday night crowd.
For Shine, the Olympics are a grand display of corporate might, a might he feels causes suffering in the world.
“You can always look at the negative, but what’s the point?” asked Halima Moin, 23, to whom Shine gave the megaphone after she accused him of being cynical.
