For the 17th year, uniformed officers in decorated military vehicles will receive thousands of donated gifts Dec. 23 from Newport Beach’s “Operation Christmas”—which supports families of active duty and reserve military members.

The gifts are intended to show support for service members’ sacrifices—since many are separated from family at Christmas in service of the country.

“We hope to make the holidays brighter this year for our troops and their families,” said city spokesperson John Pope. “We’re excited every year to participate. It’s a great way to support our troops, not just during the holidays, but also throughout the year. Sometimes these gifts are held and given for birthdays.”

In the past, gifts from Newport Beach went to support those serving in the National Guard. This year they will also be given to U.S. Space Force members and their families, according to Pope.

Last year over 2,000 gifts were donated. City officials said they hope for the same for this year.

Donations—including unwrapped new toys, new or used DVDs, sports equipment, and gift cards or cash—are still being accepted by the city until Dec. 23.

The donation program is run by Yellow Ribbon America, a non-partisan, grassroots effort founded in Orange County in 2003 meant to educate and unite Americans on how to help local military members and their families.
