AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Artworks, from over one hundred designers, formed an impressive display of both contemporary and fine pieces at the New Zealand Jewellery show’s grand opening in Auckland on Thursday, 17 July.

There was something for everyone—ranging from the unconventional to the traditional. It is the biggest event on the jewellery calendar and gives contemporary, emerging and traditional designers throughout New Zealand the chance to showcase their creations.

It is also an opportunity for the public to see the work of the entrants and finalists in The Regal Castings Awards, sponsored by Regal Castings Limited. With Nick Hensman and Chris Persen, from The Village Goldsmith, also Michael and David Robinson, from RDG,  among the finalists.

The Village Goldsmith are a group of four designers. Nick Hansman who is part of the team is the winner of the Fine Jewellery award and is one year into a four year apprenticeship. He said the Village Goldsmith is about pushing ahead with the attitude that anything is possible.

“Inspiration is ... as much as you can look at things and be inspired, it is also a workshop. I am working with four other massive really creative jewellers so that’s enough drive to get going, and more.

“This winning piece was inspired by where I am not by anything in particular but it does reflect the ocean.”

RDG are a family business originally established in 1986. Ken Robinson, father of David and Michael, said his sons “have had a keen interest in creating things since they were young boys.”

He went on to say that all their pieces are original and and many of their customers not only wear the designs but also appreciate them as an art for visual display.
