The tech-heavy Nasdaq edged higher on Monday, but was still eyeing its worst start to the year ever as investors shied away from stocks with lofty valuations amid aggressive rate hike bets and geopolitical tensions.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 34.30 points, or 0.10 percent, at the open to 34,691.17.

The S&P 500 opened lower by 0.06 points, at 4,431.79, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 41.62 points, or 0.30 percent, to 13,812.19 at the opening bell.
