MONTREAL—Shen Yun Performing Arts put on its second of five shows in Place des Arts this Friday where the renowned classical Chinese dance company was warmly received by a theatre sold out the second night in a row.
A teacher of music and visual arts, David Thibodeau, said he was very impressed by the artistic execution of the performance.
“I loved the first part ... especially the production of the decor, which appeared on the stage, it was pretty impressive,” said Mr. Thibodeau, speaking in French.
Mr. Thibodeau came to see Shen Yun last year also and returned so that his children could also watch the show.
He particularly enjoyed the interpretation of the piece called the Sand Monk Is Blessed, a tale from the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West.
“It’s really beautiful,” Mr. Thibodeau said.
Shen Yun’s Performing Arts is based in New York and has as its mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, according to the company’s website.
Each year Shen Yun audiences around the world are taken on a journey through ancient China right up to the present day. Shen Yun’s three equally large companies tour the globe simultaneously, each with its own orchestra, presenting traditional Chinese culture to a diverse audience.
One of the unique features of Shen Yun is the dynamic backdrops that depict ancient settings and Chinese landscapes while also interacting with the performers on stage. These high-tech images are said to “transport the audience to another world,” according to the company’s website.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s New York Company will play five shows in Montreal Jan. 3-6 and one show in Quebec City Jan. 8 before going on to Kitchener-Waterloo, and Toronto in its tour of eastern Canada.
