NEW YORK—A 3-year-old child was hit by a cab at the intersection of Duane and Greenwich streets in Tribeca last week as he crossed the street with his mother and brother. The child, who was wearing a helmet, was not injured.

Accidents at the intersection are mounting—10 in 10 years—and some elected officials are calling for more safety measures.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer says previous DOT actions to mitigate danger at Duane and Greenwich, such as changing signal timing, are “halfway measures.”

Stringer, along with Councilwoman Margaret Chin, and other elected officials, called on the Department of Transportation on Thursday to install a traffic light or stop sign at the intersection to prevent future accidents.

DOT said a meeting with the community board had already taken place and a “thorough examination” of the intersection and additional safety measures is underway.
