NEWBURGH—Cullen Lyons will graduate this December with a degree in business. He spoke about his positive experience as a veteran and student at Mount St. Mary College on Nov. 7.
An Air National Guard veteran deployed in Afghanistan, Lyons says Mount St. Mary College was talking with his mother about his coming to the school even before he got back home. Lyons wanted more for his eight-year-old daughter and a college degree was the answer.
He says his college experience was enhanced by the discipline he received while in the military. He says he appreciates the little things in life more. His veteran benefits have helped him get through school in many ways. He likes the Mount for the classes offered and the faculty.
County Executive Steve Neuhaus graduated from Mount St. Mary. “The school has a great reputation of being friendly to service members.” He says two of his friends were Gulf War vets, one a Marine Corps Harrier pilot and the other an Army enlisted man. Both took advantage of the GI bill to go to the school.
As Director of Admissions for Graduate Programs & Adult Degree Completion, Lisa Gallina recruits and retains adult students. She says what “we are offering is never enough.”
Her office operates programs at the West Point Garrison, at Stewart Air Force Base, and on the Mount St. Mary campus. The school provides discounted tuition for vets, career counseling, and specialized counseling for an identified need.
The school has supported military students for 25 years, according to their website. The school offers a program to assist vets transition to civilian life, undergraduate and graduate programs work with a vet’s military experience to successfully transition to a civilian career. There is also veteran housing on campus.
