A mother has turned herself in at the hospital after her baby was found abandoned, Missouri police say.
Jasmine Baldazo checked herself into a local hospital in Poplar Bluff, Mo., on Wednesday morning, reported WPSD-TV.
The 19-year-old admitted to cops that she left her child unattended on Sunday night.
Police said that her 8-month-old girl was found home alone. FOX2Now reported that the baby had a heavily soiled diaper.
An empty bottle was also found lying next to her. It’s unclear how long the baby was left unattended.
“I noticed an empty bottle near the infant,” police patrolman Jerry Cates told SEMissourian.com. “There was a box fan running, pointing at the child, but the residence was still warm.”
Clothing and toys were also found scattered around the home.
Sgt. Chuck Harris, in a report, said he found “filth and items scattered in the kitchen, including dirty dishes.”
The refrigerator’s inside was “filthy, along with the freezer compartment,” and he added that there “were few (food) items located in each that had not spoiled.”
Before Baldazo was found, officers left door hangers and business cards, asking her to contact them.
A probable cause affidavit was submitted to the prosecuting attorney in Butler County, which is seeking charges of endangering the welfare of a child.
According to KFVS-TV, the baby was released to an investigator with the Missouri Children’s Division.
Baldazo’s 2-year-old child was found in Arkansas with her grandmother and was brought back to Butler County.
She and her 8-month-old girl were placed in protective custody.
