Morocco to Close Over 1000 Mosques
After the collapse of a minaret onto worshipers at a mosque in Morocco in February, the Moroccan Ministry of Religious Affairs announced on Tuesday that it will close 1,256 mosques due to safety concerns, according to local media.

Another 416 mosques will be partially closed.

The ministry said that 513 mosques will be torn down and rebuilt.

The ministry was criticized for neglect of religious sites in the wake February’s accident in which 41 worshipers died and 76 were injured. King Mohammed ordered an inspection of the country’s mosques, which was conducted in 19,205 of the nearly 48,000 mosques.

The ministry said it will cost about $325 million for the entire demolition and refurbishment project, according to reports.
