More Bed Bath & Beyond Stores Closing

Yet more Bed Bath & Beyond stores are closing across the United States as the company attempts to fend off bankruptcy amid mounting debts and declining sales.

The retailer said earlier this month that there was “substantial doubt” that it will be able to continue and was looking into “all strategic alternatives” to avoid going into bankruptcy, including restructuring or refinancing its debt, reducing or delaying business activities, and strategic initiatives, and selling assets, among other measures.

Bed Bath & Beyond has been suffering from tight inventory, credit constraints, and increasing demands from vendors for earlier payments which it said has made it harder to keep shelves stocked.

While earlier this month Sue Gove, president and CEO of Bed Bath & Beyond, cut an optimistic tone in the retailer’s estimated financial results for the three months ended Nov. 26, 2022, the company reported deeper than expected third-quarter losses on Jan. 10.

The home goods retailer posted a net loss of $393 million for the third quarter, more than the $366 million net loss in the second quarter and up from $276.4 million a year prior. Analysts last week had anticipated a $386 million loss for the quarter.

Meanwhile, the retailer reported an adjusted loss of $3.65 per share, more than Wall Street’s estimate of a per-share loss of $2.23. Overall, net sales fell 33 percent, to $1.26 billion, according to the company.

The cash-strapped company said it was on track to cut $500 million in costs. In August, the retailer confirmed it was able to secure $500 million in financing from JP Morgan, and Sixth Street Partners.

Following the disappointing third-quarter results, Bed Bath & Beyond announced it will close additional stores across 30 states.

The company previously unveiled a list of 56 stores that will close across the United States in September, and the latest additions bring the total number of store closures to more than 120 of its 708 stores.

According to Gove, the latest closures will allow the company to “allocate resources according to customer demand” and become more “streamlined” as it adopts a “more focused infrastructure that reflects our current business.”
