Municipal and governor elections began in half of Mexico’s states on Sunday.

Election campaigns have been marked by severe violence and intimidation by drug cartels.

Rodolfo Torre Cantu, the favorite Mexican gubernatorial candidate, was assassinated seven days ago along with four others, in Mexico’s border state Tamaulipas.

Torre Cantu’s motorcade was ambushed en route to an event near Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas.

A mayoral candidate from the same state was assassinated in May.

Record-breaking levels of violence have gripped Mexico as drug cartels wage war against the military, police, civilians, and each other. The death toll in 2009, hit 7,300—an increase from the 5,700 in 2008.
