Medicare Open Enrollment will run until the end of the year on Dec. 31, allowing those with Medicare the chance to review their health and drug plans.

According to the government’s official Medicare site at http://www.medicare.gov, Open Enrollment is an annual occurrence that allows for Medicare enrollees to pick and chose between which coverage options are best for them.

“We encourage all seniors and people with disabilities in the program to look at their current coverage, compare it to the options available, and decide which coverage best meets their needs during this Open Enrollment period,” the Medicare website said.

Exclusive to this year’s open enrollment is a slew of new benefits granted by the Affordable Care Act for 2011 Medicare enrollees, including 50 percent off prescription drugs for those that fall in the “donut hole,” a free yearly “wellness visit,” and no co-pays for select preventive care services.

“There’s never been a better time for Medicare beneficiaries to check out their Medicare coverage,” Centeres for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Donald Berwick said in a statement. “By shopping for next year’s coverage now, people with Medicare may find even greater savings or better coverage than they are getting this year.”

Those interested in Open Enrollment are encouraged to consult their 2011 Medicare & You Handbook, visit medicare.gov, or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
