A black male carrying a “AK-47 style gun” has shot at least one person in Charleston, West Virginia on Thursday evening, reports Elizabeth Noreika, a reporter with WCHS.

The area around Southmoor Apartments and South Charleston High School is shut down as police officers search for the gunman. The Kanawha Co. Sheriff’s SWAT team is assisting.

Lucky Ray, who lives on Chestnut Street near the entrance to Southmoor Apartments, told the Charleston Gazette that he heard two to three shots from what sounded like a heavy caliber firearm and one or two other shots from what sounded like a smaller caliber weapon.

The person who is confirmed to have been shot was transported in an ambulance away from the scene and to an area hospital.
