A man shot dead by the Quebec police at his home on July 27 has been identified as an RCMP officer who allegedly seriously injured a woman and a teenager.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:05 a.m. on July 27 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu—a city about 40 kilometres southeast of Montreal—according to a French-language statement from the province’s independent police oversight agency, Bureau des enquêtes indépendates (BEI).

Preliminary information provided to BEI indicates that the 48-year-old man “called 911, saying that he had just committed the unforgivable [‘l’irréparable' in French],” the statement reads.

Officers from the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu police department arrived at the man’s residence, located on rue du Biat, where they found the man armed with a knife, according to the statement.

Shots were fired, and the man was reportedly shot at least once. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police found a woman and a teenager inside the residence, both with life-threatening injuries. They were transported to hospital in serious condition.

Six BEI investigators have been assigned to study the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the conduct of the police officers involved in the shooting.

Quebec provincial police, who are in charge of investigating the events that led to the attack on the woman and boy, said later in the day that both victims remain in hospital and that the woman’s injuries are more serious than those of the teenager.
