KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—Shen Yun Performing Arts’ mission is to revive authentic Chinese culture, something that mainland Chinese are eager to see.

Ms. Xi is a teacher from China. She flew from Hong Kong to attend the Shen Yun performance in Kaohsiung on Saturday, March 17.

As a teacher, Ms. Xi said she was fond of culture and arts, and felt that it was a great pity that authentic performing arts have been missing in China for years. “I went through the Cultural Revolution—our Chinese culture would be gone if things were done in the way of it [Cultural Revolution.] This (Shen Yun) is indeed what belongs to us Chinese people, and has been missing in China for years.”

“This is our authentic Chinese culture!” she said, adding that it was well worth flying to Taiwan to watch the performance.

Ms. Xi’s response after the performance was unequivocal: “Terrific! Terrific! Each single program is very good! Very excellent! Each movement is carried so delicately!” She praised all aspects of the program, from costumes, dance, music and high-tech animated backdrops.

She was particularly impressed with the solo by Hong Ming. “Wow! Indeed remarkable! How resonant is his voice, as suggested by his name!” she said.

The solo performances and lyrics moved Ms Xi to tears, and inspired her spiritually. She said she felt that Shen Yun’s solos “contain spiritual realm, inner meaning, and a certain inner spirit.” She compared this to music created after the Cultural Revolution, which lacks inner meaning.

“Being able to listen to the music, I feel proud. With so many talents here, I admire them. Shen Yun really can renew Chinese culture.”
