Liverpool coasted to a comfortable 3–1 win over PSV Eindhoven at Anfield in Wednesday’s European Champions League action as Robbie Keane scored his first goal for the club while captain Steven Gerrard scored his 100th.

PSV, weakened by the absence of Ibrahim Affeley, was a shadow of the team that knocked out Arsenal two years ago in the round of 16, and the one that reached the semifinals four years ago.

Liverpool has started very well in the Premiership and their good form has continued in the Champions League. Wednesday’s win marks the first time they’ve won their opening two games to start a Champions League campaign. Liverpool fans will remember last year’s horrific start when the team managed only a draw from their first three games.

Keane and Gerrard will be pleased to get the monkey off their backs. Keane slid a Fernando Torres pass into the far side of the net to give the Reds a 2–0 lead. Gerrard made it 3–0 off a free kick. So maybe now people will stop talking about when Keane will finally score for Liverpool and when Gerrard will score his 100th.

Liverpool’s next two games will be against Atletico Madrid who has also won their opening two games. The two teams are tied atop Group D with six points, so these two matches promise to be hotly contested given the number of Spanish players involved on both sides and what’s at stake.

In other action, Barcelona’s Argentine superstar Lionel Messi came off the bench to score two goals in the final four minutes of the game to steal a win from Shakhtar 2–1. Shakhtar’s keeper was badly at fault on the first goal as he failed to snag a low cross, giving Messi the easy tap-in.

Chelsea bored fans with a scoreless draw in Transylvania against CFR Cluj, while Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan could only manage a 1–1 draw at home against Werder Bremen of Germany.
