After ABC cancelled the TV series “Last Man Standing” in 2017, the new season on Fox has had a surprisingly successful opening.

There were eight million viewers watching the premiere of the 7th season of Tim Allen’s 30-minute sitcom Friday night on Sept. 28, according to Entertainment Weekly, making it the most-watched comedy on Fox in almost seven years.

Allen also attended his first Thursday Night Football game on Sept. 27, where the Minnesota Vikings challenge the Los Angeles Rams, to promote his show. Fox also advertised the sitcom on Fox Sports channel during NASCAR, college football, as well as MLB and NFL games.

In fact, the “Last Man Standing” season 7 premiere on Fox reached more viewers than its season 6 premiere on ABC, making the show a strong addition to Fox’s Friday night lineup.

“Last Man Standing” is about a married man named Mike Baxter with three daughters. As the marketing director of an outdoor sporting goods store and living in a home dominated by four women, he tries to maintain his manliness, often in a humorous way.

His stay-at-home wife Vanessa, plays by Nancy Travis, returns to work, and he needs to do more parenting than before, which proves to be a challenge.

Fox picked up “Last Man Standing” in May.

“It just really made sense” this year, said Michael Thorn, the president of entertainment at Fox according to AdWeek. “And fortunately for us, Tim wanted to do it.”
