Broccoli salad has been identified as the source of food poisoning that made more than 1,500 students and staff became ill in Japan earlier this month, according to Hokkaido newspaper Doshin.
The salad, served Feb. 9 at nine primary and secondary schools in Iwamisawa in Japan’s Hokkaido Prefecture, was prepared at a joint school cooking facility.
The prefectural government announced on Tuesday that it believed the broccoli salad became contaminated from unsterilized utensils used at the kitchen facility, or from chicken that was cooked close by.
The strain of salmonella found in the stool of sick students was also found on the kitchen utensils.
More than 1,500 students and staff developed food poisoning symptoms, but all are now recovering, reports Japan Times.
The school lunch kitchen was ordered by city health officials to halt operations and thoroughly sterilize all kitchen equipment.
