Kang Wong, a New York City man, was beaten up for jaywalking.
Wong, 84, was walking on the Upper West Side over the weekend when he began jaywalking, as is usual in the city.
But a police ordered him to stop when crossing at 96th Street and Broadway around 5 p.m., because he was walking against the light.
Wong lives a block away. He didn’t appear to understand the cop, a witness told the New York Post.
“The guy didn’t seem to speak English. The cop walked him over to the Citibank. [The officer] stood him up against the wall and was trying to write him a ticket. The man didn’t seem to understand, and he started walking away. The cop tried to pull him back, and that’s when he began to struggle with the cop. As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere.”

Wong’s 41-year-old son, who didn’t give his name, said that police weren’t answering his questions. “The cops are playing games. They won’t tell me what he’s being charged with.”
Another member of the family said that they will probably press charges against the police.
Wong needed to be hospitalized for several hours after the incident.
The New York Police Department launched an anti-jaywalking campaign at the intersection after the third pedestrian in nine days was killed in an incident on Sunday.
He was charged with obstruction of government administration, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, the NY Daily News reported, citing police.
