John Jimmy Macharia, a Manchester United fan, committed suicide in Nairobi after his team lost.
Macharia, 23, jumped from the 7th floor of a building he was in on December 7 after he learned that Manchester United lost 1-0 to Newcastle, police said.
Macharia told his friends he couldn’t stand watching his team get beaten, Nairobi County police chief Benson Kibue told Kenya’s Standard Digital.
“All witness accounts suggest he committed suicide because the team lost but officers are still talking to those who were with him as part of the investigations into the incident,” he said.
Kibue warned people about getting too attached to football (soccer).
“It is not the first time we are losing a young man because of the football in England, which is far away from us. They need to know that is just a game,” said Kibue.
Manchester United’s loss was the second defeat in four days.
