On the morning of April 6, 2009, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 occurred in central Italian region of Abruzzo. The earthquake caused the death of 294 people and injured about 1,500. Countless historic buildings were destroyed. This was one of the deadliest earthquakes that had hit Italy in almost 30 years. The devastating effects rendered 40,000 without homes, schools, hospitals, and many other everyday necessities.

Weeks later, Gary Bologna, chief operating officer of Alicart visited Abruzzo, where some of Carmine’s wines are produced. During his visit, he was able to see upfront the damaging effects of the earthquake. Immediately after he returned to New York, Gary got together with his business associates. Together they planned a dinner to help raise money for Italy’s earthquake victims. The event was held on June 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Carmine’s in the Theater District. The event featured a reception followed by a four-course dinner, as well as a silent auction to raise additional money for the earthquake victims.
