Canada’s largest fall home show is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a cake and a whole new show for baby boomers this Thanksgiving weekend. The International Home Show (IHS) returns to Mississauga’s International Centre for a dynamic 4-day run from Oct. 8-11.
“We are launching our new Better Living Boomer show. This is an added feature to the IHS, and because we’re having our 25th birthday bash we are launching this fabulous new show to celebrate,” says Suzanne Burnie, IHS events and sponsorship manager.
The boomer show is intended for the 40-plus professional and includes everything from food and wine to workshops on retirement planning and beauty makeovers. Labeled a “show-within-a-show,” the boomer show also includes sections on food and wine, technology and health care.
With over 400 exhibitors, the home show features several special attractions including old favourites such as a full-sized model home, the Celebrity Kitchen, the New Product Display, and the $10,000 Shopping Spree Contest.
“Because it is our 25th birthday we’ve decided to pull out all the stops and make a big splash, a birthday bash for the consumers that are coming to the show,” says Burnie.
“We’re having more specials, and if it’s your birthday on the 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th you get in for free…. There’s always free parking, and over 25 celebrities will be there for free seminars.”
The DIY Learning Centre will offer workshops where people can learn how to build, she adds.
“So instead of just buying things and going for it and figuring out if you can do it, here there’s going to be a new educational centre and you can learn things right onsite by trying the tools and learning from real professionals who are there to help people.”
While the home show specializes in building, décor, and home improvement products, it takes a holistic approach by including sections focusing on food, financial, and health and wellness.
The celebrity speakers are of course not to be missed, and with experts such as CityLine’s “Around the House” Lynn Spence, gardening expert Frank Ferragine, and Inside the Box co-host Janette Ewan, visitors are in for a set of lively, informative sessions.
Other attraction include the Green Street Pavilion, with products and services from solar to wind to geothermal, and the Celebrity Super House Theatre, Suite 25—a Las Vegas-inspired suite.
“We want people to experience something new,” says Burnie. “We want people to come and see the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, and we have transformed our celebrity super house stage with $225,000 worth of products in order to wow our attendees.”
And that’s what the home show is all about—Torontonians who “really want to take care of their home,” she adds.
“The consumers are the winners because they receive the benefit from the businesses, and the businesses are winners because we’re of course really helping the economy and the local business owners. It’s a fantastic way of supporting our city. We’re really going to have a fantastic show.”
