Hurricane Paula dropped to a Category 1 storm as it left Cancun heading toward the western side of Cuba, announced the U.S. National Hurricane Center on Wednesday.

The storm had harried Cancun, Mexico’s top tourist area, when it was a Category 2 hurricane, whipping the region with 100 mph winds. Paula’s wind speeds, as of Wednesday evening, slowed to 85 mph.

No major damage was reported in resort areas on the Yucatan Peninsula, and officials in the area guaranteed that the 27,000 tourists visiting the region would be safe, reported AP.

However, the hurricane did cause canceled flights and spur boat and yacht owners to bring their vessels to shore.

Paula is the ninth hurricane of the 2010 season. The U.S. National Hurricane Center estimates it may reach western Cuba late Wednesday or early Thursday.
