[xtypo_dropcap]T[/xtypo_dropcap]he wall of a Hungarian reservoir that burst last week releasing a flood of toxic sludge is verging on total collapse, according to media reports.

Hungary’s environmental secretary said the wall could collapse within a day or a week, according to BBC.

Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, sounded the alarm Saturday saying, “Cracks have appeared on the northern wall of the reservoir, which makes it very likely that the whole wall will collapse.” He said work crews had begun building emergency dams to protect destroyed villages from further damage, according to the Guardian.

The flood on Oct. 4 took the lives of at least seven people and around 150 people sustained burn injuries from the toxic mud.

If the wall collapses, over 17,000,000 more cubic feet of the industrial waste, about half the amount that has already escaped, could flood out of the reservoir, experts estimated, according to the report.
