Women in the House Republican caucus celebrated the passage of a bill on Thursday that would bar athletes born as male from competing in sports designated for women and girls.
The bill, H.R. 734—the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023”—states that it is a violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 for federally funded education programs or activities to allow transgender athletes to participate in programs or activities that are designated for women or girls. The bill passed on party lines in the House by a vote of 219–203 Thursday morning.
