A group of drummers from The Munford High School Band in Tennessee has created waves with their jaw-dropping performance. A video of their spectacle shows talented students drumming without actually using a single drum.

The band, which comprises over 200 students from grades 9 to 12, has won several national awards and is one of the most recognized groups in the southeast according to their website. However, it was a drum performance in December 2019 that gave them viral status and nationwide recognition.
A video that was filmed and posted by a sophomore snare drum performer, Blaine Pittman’s mom, features the drumline playing at their school’s annual Christmas concert. “I never miss an opportunity to video their performances because it is always spectacular,” Pittman’s mom, Angel McCann, told WMC.
The viral clip shows every member of the drumline in colorful Christmas sweaters. Each student begins playing, first just with their sticks. Then they are seen tapping their feet before proceeding to use the chairs instead of an actual drum. McCann posted the clip on Dec. 12, 2019, with the caption, “They did the THANG!” Synchronizing with each other and making use of everyday objects around them, the team put on an incredible performance that was met with cheers and applause from the audience.

Since its posting, the video has racked up nearly 4.8 million views and been shared 130,000 times, charming Facebook users. A surprised McCann said, “But I never imagined it would get this recognition.”

However, McCann believes the group totally deserves the spotlight. “We knew this group was special, and now the whole country knows!” she said. “We are so proud of them.”

Many took to Facebook to comment on the drumline’s stunning performance. One user wrote, “Sometimes I think about quitting Facebook, and then I see something like this.” A second user wrote, “Wow, look at those views!! It would be so cool to know just how far this video has gone.”

Meanwhile, several others from the community expressed their amazement toward these students. “These kids are so talented and funny. America will love them!” a third comment read.

According to the Munford Band website, their band members join Munford Middle school bands in sixth grade. Here they begin their musical training and hone their skills so that they can attend competitions while in high school.

Over the years, Munford Band Members have won several nationwide contests such as USBANDS National Champions and Bandmasters Championship. They have even participated in the Tournament of Roses Parade, and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“The Munford High School Band is a high-energy organization that strives to both educate and entertain our city and community,” their website states.

It’s hard to imagine the amount of rehearsal and work that goes into creating something so special—especially drumming without any drums. However, it’s no wonder why these high schoolers went viral.

“These kids are so deserving of the recognition they are getting,” McCann said.
