Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel won Canada’s first medal at the London Summer Olympics taking a bronze medal on Sunday in the Women’s Synchronized 3m Springboard event.
The Canadians edged past the Italian duo of Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dellape' to get the bronze medal after five dives by a margin of 2.70 points.
“We trained so hard for this,” Heymans said in an interview with CTV. “I was really nervous a few days ago. Training was going well so that calmed me down.”
Heymans, 30, has now become the first Canadian summer Olympian to win a medal in four consecutive Olympic games.
“It’s great. It’s awesome,” Heymans said about the record. “I don’t know what to say at this point.”
“I wanted to be beside Emilie [when she set the record],” Abel said.
Synchronized diving is a partnership and Abel spoke about why their partnership is so strong. “We love the same thing and we hate the same thing,” Abel said.
The Chinese duo of Wu Minxia and He Zi easily claimed the gold medal with a score of 346.20. Capturing silver was the American tandem of Kelci Bryant and Abigail Johnston with a score of 321.90. Canada’s Heymans and Abel finished 5.10 points behind the silver medalists.
