Guardiola: Won’t Change Style at Bayern
MUNICH— Pep Guardiola is insisting he won’t change his football philosophy after Bayern Munich’s Champions League exit raised questions over his possession-heavy strategy. He says it’s up to the club to decide whether he’s the right coach.
Guardiola says on Friday that Bayern “will play with my ideas next year,” news agency dpa reported. He says of the Bundesliga champion’s current squad: “These players will play with my ideas — 100 percent.”
Guardiola’s tactics have drawn scrutiny after Real Madrid outfoxed Bayern in the Champions League semifinals, thrashing the German side 4-0 in Munich on Tuesday to complete a 5-0 aggregate win.
Guardiola says Bayern’s top officials have to decide “whether the coach is the right man for the club.” The club leadership hasn’t raised any doubts over his position.
Germany Goalkeeper Neuer Extends Bayern Contract
MUNICH— Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has extended his contract with the club through June, 2019.
Rummenigge told the club’s extraordinary general meeting on Friday that the 28-year-old Neuer agreed to stay another three years at Bayern. Neuer’s previous deal ran to 2016.
Rummenigge says he was impressed that Neuer approached the club two days after its Champions League exit to Real Madrid and that “it’s also a sign of his wonderful character that he said, ‘I want Bayern Munich forever.’”
Neuer has played 93 league games for Bayern since 2011, when he switched in a fraught move from Bundesliga rival and childhood club Schalke.
He has made 45 appearances for Germany.
Hoeness Slams Media as Bayern Elects Successor
MUNICH— Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness parted with bitter words for the media on Friday as Karl Hopfner was elected his successor.
Hoeness, who resigned on March 14 after being convicted of evading millions of euros (dollars) in tax through an undeclared Swiss bank account, acknowledged that he had “made a mistake” but slammed journalists for their handling of the case.
“I experienced something in the last weeks that I never experienced before: hate,” Hoeness said. “What was written about me and my family is unbelievable. Most of the journalists who wrote things about me did so without ever meeting me. It’s not about reporting, it’s about making money.”
Hoeness told the club’s extraordinary general meeting he had also received “thousands” of letters of support “in contrast to the reports written about me.”
Hoeness, who is expected to soon begin his 3-year prison term, said he was proud of what he had achieved at Bayern, where he spent the majority of his playing career in the 1970s. He joined the club’s management structure in 1979.
“Many say, ‘Uli Hoeness destroyed his life’s work with his mistake.’ I don’t see it that way,” the 63-year-old said. “When I’m back, I won’t sit quietly. That wasn’t it yet.”
Hopfner received all but six votes, including one abstention, from 1,593 Bayern members in the election for Hoeness’ successor. The 61-year-old former club vice-president had been the only candidate.
“Many thanks for this vote in confidence. We will do all we can ensure you won’t be disappointed,” said Hopfner, who also thanked Hoeness for his contribution to the club.
