NEW YORK—New York City’s .nyc became the most popular new domain name extension launched to date yesterday, Oct. 8, with more than 20,000 new websites registered by the end of the first day of public availability, according to industry statistics

By 3 p.m. yesterday, GoDaddy, the world’s largest domain registrar, had registered more than 10,000 new .nyc website addresses, and that number climbed even higher by the close of business.

HelloDotNYC.com registered almost 3,000 new .nyc domains yesterday, putting it in second place for its number of registrations, according to Gerardo Aristizabal, the company’s managing director.

Aristizabal said one third of the domains HelloDotNYC.com registered yesterday were Landrush preregistrations, around half were normal preregistrations, and the remaining were people who got online yesterday to buy a .nyc domain.

Aristizabal said the numbers were “pretty impressive,” and “chaos was all around” yesterday.

A .nyc domain costs $23.99 through HelloDotNYC.com and $24.99 at GoDaddy.
