The “leak” of the upcoming Gears of War title and release date turned out to be a hack.

Late on Wednesday, August 13, a page on the official Xbox Twitch channel showed up with the words “gow_repercussion,” and “embargo 11/7/14,” which seemed to suggest that the upcoming Gears of War game would be titled “Repercussion” and is set for a November 7, 2014 release.

Although it was presumed that a major Microsoft leak had taken place, it was later revealed by Polygon that the Twitch profiles for Xbox, PlayStation, and the eSports League (ESL) were hacked by a third party.

Twitch informed Polygon that they believe that the accounts were compromised at Gamescom2014, and have since deleted the posts.

Microsoft has yet to officially announce a release date for Gears of War 4.

The game will be produced by Black Tusk studios, which is helmed by Rod Fergusson, one of the original developers of Gears of War.

In an interview, Fergusson says that he will return to the “core essence” of the Gears series, and they might look to expand on current Gears lore to drive the series forward.

“There’s lots of stuff, backstory from the E Day, Pendulum Wars all the way to Gears 3, there’s a lot of room in there,” he said.

“But I don’t know if that’s the place to go.

“I think there’s lots of other places to go as well.”
