The third son of ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has entered Niger, media reports said on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Niger government confirmed reports that Saadi Gadhafi and several other senior officials entered the West African nation.

“At this moment the convoy is en route to Agadez [in northern Niger]. The convoy could arrive in Niamey [the capital] between now and tomorrow,” Niger spokesperson and justice minister Marou Adamou told Al Jazeera television.

Saadi Gadhafi, a former soccer player turned army commander, is said to have made contact with rebel authorities to negotiate an end to the conflict in Libya.

The senior Gadhafi’s current whereabouts are unknown but last week, he insisted he was still in Libya and would continue the fight against rebel-backed National Transitional Council forces. Rebels control the majority of the country, barring several cities that are still under Gadhafi loyalists.

Other members of Gadhafi’s family, including his daughter and wife, have fled to neighboring Algeria.

NTC forces launched an attack on the loyalist-held city of Bani Walid, located around 100 miles south of Tripoli, on Sunday. They also said they were moving in closer on the city of Sirte, BBC reported.
