French President Nicholas Sarkozy has become the first world leader to recognize the rebel government in Libya as the nation’s “legitimate government.”
Sarkozy made the announcement after meeting with representatives of the National Transitional Council (NTC) in Paris Thursday, reported France 24.
The announcement comes as NATO country defense ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss the Libyan crisis.
The NTC declared itself the transitional government in eastern city of Beghazi on Feb. 27. Sarkozy said France will create an embassy in Benghazi and exchange ambassadors with Libya’s new government.
Yesterday, NTC representative Jebril El-Waalfarvi also met with Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey as part of a European tour to drum up support for the opposition government.
